How do I join the Dalton America Y-DNA project?

We welcome all who believe they may have a person with a Dalton surname in their ancestry to join in our Dalton America family group project.  If you have simply found our sight via the internet, you will want to begin by ordering a DNA kit from our affilitated company, Family Tree DNA.  We will provide some advice on which kit to order.  When your results come back, you will have an FTDNA personal site with the FTDNA dashboard established for you.

You may join the family group by going to the FTDNA dashboard, clicking on [myPROJECTS] on the horizontal menu at the top of the page, and then clicking on [Join a Project].

A list of family group projects will open.  Select "DaltonAmerica," and click on the JOIN button. You will be added to our members and we will begin corresponding with you as a member, sending you our monthly newsletter and working with you as administrators.

Those who have found a Dalton connection in their AtDNA (FTDNA Family Finder, Ancestry, or 123&me ancestry test) results may wish to supplement that test with a FTDNA Y-DNA test to see if their connection to the Daltons is in the male line.  If you have an FTDNA test already on file, click on [ADD ONS AND UPGRADES]    just to the left of your name in the upper right hand corner of your dashboard and order the Y-DNA test.   We recommend that you begin with either a 37 or 67 marker test to join the Y-DNA project.

Other than the DNA test from FTDNA, the other necessary ingredient to contribute is some knowledge of your family. The Family Tree DNA company strongly urges participants to base their family line on documented research – limited or extensive.

For those who have taken a Y-DNA test, once you have received results, compare them to your matches who share a common, but not always identically spelled, surname (for example, various family members have spelled the surname Dalton, Dolton, Daulton, perhaps even Dorton and Dawlton).  The comparison of Y-DNA test results indicates whether your family line is:

      1. a Dalton surname line
      2. related to known Dalton settlements, or
      3. related by a common ancestor.

Even those with very different surnames may find that they have Y-DNA common with Daltons.  This may be a sign of an adoption in the family line -- legal or informal -- or may be a sign of a relationship never legally formalized.

Obtaining your sample is quick and painless and submitting the test is simple. The administrators will be happy to answer any questions you have about the process or questions about the management of your submission.

DNA tests can contribute significantly to your family history. The results may scale brick walls or offer clues for further research. Once tested, your DNA is preserved for your future generations who will then have available their genetic history should they want it or need it.
