Working with my Y-DNA matches
Step 3: Locating your Dalton America Descendant Group
Although corresponding with your
matches will be the way you will fill in the details revealed by your
Y-DNA results, there is actually information on your male ancestral line
ready soon after your test is reported. That is the results of
the Dalton America administrator’s analysis of how your DNA fits into
the patterns of other project members.
To access this information, go to the Dalton America Family Group Homepage. Select DNA RESULTS from the menu on the left. A submenu will open. Select Colorized Chart. A screen like this will open:
This page is a compilation of the values on all markers for the members
of the group. You may look at these in more detail later.
For right now, insert your Kit No. in the search box and initiate the search. The chart will be reduced to your test results. Then look at the line right above your results. It will read something like the line circled in blue above. Copy that group notation. [If your group is labeled "Ungrouped",
the administrators have not yet had a chance to analyze your results
and locate you among the families. We apologize and ask you to
email us or check back in a few days after we have had a chance to place
you among the descendant groups. If you are in the group labeled "No Current Subgroup"
it means that there are not yet enough of your matches among the Dalton
America members to make this step meaningful. So, advance to step 4.
Now return to the Dalton America homepage. In the horizontal menu near the top choose Results. After an introduction you will see three blue menu choices. Choose Reading the Dalton America Y-DNA Charts.
A page will open explaining how to locate yourself in a Descendant
Group. After reading through this, move down the page until you
see the group that you copied from the results page. Here will be
the description of what DNA tells us about the cluster of Daltons that
you and your matches belong to: your descendant group
This information will help orient you and your matches in your search
for your common ancestor and the branches that divide his descendants.
